Good article on Program Conversion on V6R1

I just read an article in the IBM Systems Magazine titled “Preparing for V6R1” which I suggest you go and read if you’re planning to move to V6R1. It’s concise and well explained. The only thing that seem to not work is that I get a Server Error when trying to see the figures, I’m getting an “HTTP 404″ from the “Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.832; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.832″… no wonder why, really. ;-)

There’s an “Impact on Domino” supplement that is good also.

I haven’t posted anything here regarding Domino and V6R1 because we’re trying to have everything properly documented. You’ll see the redpapers for i5/OS, information in the Domino for System i ibm.com page and not sure if in the Release Notes. I’ll probably talk about something if I see anything missing in those.

Keep your QNOTES user profile as originally created

Throughout the years I have seen a few times that the QNOTES user profile (*USRPRF) is changed in one way or another, causing undesirable and unknown effects. For example, recently, the QNOTES user profile on a system had the *ALLOBJ special authority, and this is not good, even dangerous I think. The only special authority that the Domino installation process in the System i (since the AS/400 days) gives to QNOTES is *IOSYSCFG.

Keep your Domino user profile as it should and you certainly will avoid problems.

Oh, and by the way, I recall vaguely that several years ago a customer had a group profile to manage its users and the user profile he was using to install Domino or create Domino servers was a member of a group which had the authorities required to do the job, but that’s not something supported by the product. Well, as you can see in the disclaimer on the sidebar, this is my own opinion. Just trust me and everything will work for you.

Generate and Keep joblogs

I just saw a good tip on Chris’ blog, when you’re running important things in the System i do not forget to keep the joblogs in case something goes wrong, because that will help us identify easily where the problem was. And I’m saying this as perhaps the guy who knows more in the world about installing and removing Domino on the System i platform ;-)

I prefer the DSPJOBLOG OUTPUT(*PRINT), perhaps because I’m a developer or because I still use the same session for more things.

What I do not suggest is generate a joblog with the SIGNOFF *LIST when you’re removing Domino from your system, due to some functionality of the system I’ve seen “weird” things appear on the joblogs (you know, *MSGF is deleted and joblog is generated/built afterwards).

Implementing IBM Lotus Domino 7 for i5/OS - Redbook

This post is just a heads up for those that have IBM Lotus Domino 7 installed on iSeries (or System i).

I just noticed that the Implementing IBM Lotus Domino 7 for i5/OS Redbook is out there, and I have to say that I participated with several comments and updates to it. Hope you find it useful but if there’s something wrong or that you don’t understand I guess you should be able to send feedback by going to the ‘Contact us’ link in there (I have never tried that so I’m not 100% sure that’s the proper URL to follow).

I hope you’re eagerly awaiting, the same as I do, for Domino 8 to be out! ;-)

Lotus Notes and Domino 8 Public Beta!

In case you didn’t know this already, the Notes and Domino 8 public beta is now available for you to enjoy!

You can see more information on Ed Brill’s blog.

Here comes Lotusphere 2007!

I’m so excited about next week because there will be an event you shouldn’t miss if you are in the Lotus software arena, I’m talking about Lotusphere 2007 !! Oh yes !

If you’re going to go then you’re privileged ! Because there will be important and interesting announcements in there that I’m sure you’ll like (as me!).

Pay attention to the news sites and the community of bloggers about all Lotus because you’ll be surprised, I am sure !

IBM Blogroll on ibm.com

As you already saw in Andy’s and Ed Brill’s weblogs, there’s a list of IBM Bloggers in the IBM Blogroll page.

The most exciting thing is that I’m in there near a lot of brilliant people. With some of them I’ve had little conversations in the internal IBM Blogosphere but now I’ll try to start building conversations here in the wild. :-)

I’ll try to post more frequently in here.

Oh, yes, and as Alan says, the site is run via Domino! ;-)

New WRKDOMSVR option in Domino 7.0.2 for System i

Chris noticed that we added some new WRKDOMSVR options in 7.0.2 (it was added by someone in my team actually!), I’m glad he liked them. Pretty handy when troubleshooting a problem with a Domino server on the System i.

And yes, he’s correct about making sure not to use the WRKDOMSVR command because the installation may stop or not be successful. We documented that a long time ago but sometimes I have to still remember people to be sure no one is on the WRKDOMSVR command while installing a release of Domino.

Keeping track of Notes/Domino bloggers

I just saw a post over at Ed Brill’s blog titled Bloggers - Please register on dominoblogs.com, and I was tempted to register my weblog because being a Domino for iSeries developer I’m planning to really start blogging about Domino and the iSeries platform.

But when I went to the dominoblogs.com I discovered that México is not contemplated in the zones that appear there. I’m just seeing two areas where the country I live in may fit, but not at all.

For people who know about geography, México is in North America, but seems that North America was limited to USA and Canada. There’s another zone defined there which is “Central & South America”, but since México is in North America it obviously isn’t in Central America.

Hope this is not something to separate the elite from the non-elite, in the end this is all about collaboration in the Flat World, so I expect this to be fixed.

Lotusphere 2006 sources of information

Just wanted to list in here some weblogs that will be sharing information from the Lotusphere 2006 event in Orlando:

  • Kelly Samardak’s weblog at developerWorks. For sure I’ll read it in its entirety because Kelly’s internal weblog in IBM is really good, I enjoy her coolness way of saying things.
  • Ed Brill’s weblog. Most of the latest information about Notes, Domino and Lotus.
  • Rocky Oliver’s weblog. Lots of good stuff in there.
  • Chris Whisonant’s weblog. I started to read his blog some time ago when I discovered on Ed Brill’s blog that Chris uses the Domino for iSeries product, for which I’m a developer. Very interesting weblog for me.
  • Andy Piper’s weblog. He’s not attending the Lotusphere 2006, neither do I, but he’s a pretty good blogger and I’m sure he will add good opinions/information about all this.

I think you will be all set following those blogs, from them you’ll be able to get into other weblogs of interest to you.
