Good article on Program Conversion on V6R1

I just read an article in the IBM Systems Magazine titled “Preparing for V6R1” which I suggest you go and read if you’re planning to move to V6R1. It’s concise and well explained. The only thing that seem to not work is that I get a Server Error when trying to see the figures, I’m getting an “HTTP 404″ from the “Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.832; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.832″… no wonder why, really. ;-)

There’s an “Impact on Domino” supplement that is good also.

I haven’t posted anything here regarding Domino and V6R1 because we’re trying to have everything properly documented. You’ll see the redpapers for i5/OS, information in the Domino for System i ibm.com page and not sure if in the Release Notes. I’ll probably talk about something if I see anything missing in those.

Keep your QNOTES user profile as originally created

Throughout the years I have seen a few times that the QNOTES user profile (*USRPRF) is changed in one way or another, causing undesirable and unknown effects. For example, recently, the QNOTES user profile on a system had the *ALLOBJ special authority, and this is not good, even dangerous I think. The only special authority that the Domino installation process in the System i (since the AS/400 days) gives to QNOTES is *IOSYSCFG.

Keep your Domino user profile as it should and you certainly will avoid problems.

Oh, and by the way, I recall vaguely that several years ago a customer had a group profile to manage its users and the user profile he was using to install Domino or create Domino servers was a member of a group which had the authorities required to do the job, but that’s not something supported by the product. Well, as you can see in the disclaimer on the sidebar, this is my own opinion. Just trust me and everything will work for you.

Use del.icio.us to find useful resources

It was funny, and a coincidence, that after I finished updating something in my del.icio.us bookmarks I saw a blog post on Search400.com mentioning that del.icio.us is a good place to check for information regarding the AS/400 and iSeries, but that they didn’t find anything tagged with “System i”. Well, I guess Mark didn’t try the “System_i” tag which is the one I use but, regularly, I use it in conjunction with the iSeries tag.

If you try the POWER, POWER6, and alike tags you may find more interesting stuff. ;-)

The System i turning 19

Just so that I (nor you) miss this, here’s a few interesting resources I’m seeing around the AS/400… hmm, iSeries… not ! System i (ouch) world.

The System iNetwork/iNews is celebrating its 25th anniversary and I’m sure they’ll have interesting articles and information in there. In the Podcasts section there’s an interview that Paul Conte made with Frank Soltis.

In The iSeries blog is a reference to an article in IT Jungle called The AS/400 at 19: Predicting the Future–Or Not which I haven’t had to chance to read but I am sure that it’ll be interesting, as always.

I’m sure there will be more information flowing, so instead of updating this post or adding comments, you can follow my iSeries or System_i tags from my bookmarks in del.icio.us by subscribing to any of the feeds.

Generate and Keep joblogs

I just saw a good tip on Chris’ blog, when you’re running important things in the System i do not forget to keep the joblogs in case something goes wrong, because that will help us identify easily where the problem was. And I’m saying this as perhaps the guy who knows more in the world about installing and removing Domino on the System i platform ;-)

I prefer the DSPJOBLOG OUTPUT(*PRINT), perhaps because I’m a developer or because I still use the same session for more things.

What I do not suggest is generate a joblog with the SIGNOFF *LIST when you’re removing Domino from your system, due to some functionality of the system I’ve seen “weird” things appear on the joblogs (you know, *MSGF is deleted and joblog is generated/built afterwards).

Implementing IBM Lotus Domino 7 for i5/OS - Redbook

This post is just a heads up for those that have IBM Lotus Domino 7 installed on iSeries (or System i).

I just noticed that the Implementing IBM Lotus Domino 7 for i5/OS Redbook is out there, and I have to say that I participated with several comments and updates to it. Hope you find it useful but if there’s something wrong or that you don’t understand I guess you should be able to send feedback by going to the ‘Contact us’ link in there (I have never tried that so I’m not 100% sure that’s the proper URL to follow).

I hope you’re eagerly awaiting, the same as I do, for Domino 8 to be out! ;-)

New System i models

In case you haven’t seen them I’ll share with you a few links where you can have a look to these new and cheaper models.

What you want to do after meeting the System i

Did you already saw the videos that were put on YouTube by user ITRevenge001?

I have to say that when I knew about the AS/400 almost 9 years ago and started to realize what you can do with it and the strengths that it has in all aspects, I looked to Windows and said “what a costly and buggy piece of crap!”. I remember that I previously was doing “Professional Practices” (don’t know if this is known or can be really translated to english but it’s different than social service in that you get paid a very little fee for your services) in a very big company (one of the biggest breweries in México that has plants in other countries as well) where they had email, but actually not most of the people had email in this specific plant (I was given an account), it was “powered” by Microsoft Exchange mainly because Head Quarters (in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México) had a company license with Microsoft (you know, they were locked in and perhaps they still are… Hopefully not).

Obviously it was hosted in Windows machines and I don’t have to say that Exchange was down several times a week, sometimes a few times per day. It was unbelievable really! The interesting thing is that for the critical piece of their business (HR, the payments for their employees that I forgot how that’s called in english, etc.) they had a mainframe, not sure if was one of the older zSeries or iSeries, and it worked like a charm.

I also did “Professional Practices” in a plant part of the biggest and more powerful group (company) in México and they had an AS/400. All of this was previous to my employment in IBM, and when I joined the company I knew what was all of this about. The AS/400 and the more powerful in all aspects iSeries and System i just work and give you all that you need in advance in the O.S.

If you have Windows machines or servers it’s no wonder why you have downtimes, crashes, BSODs, automatic reboots, patches, etc., regularly and the not so obvious thing is that you may be missing millions of dollars because of that. And I may say that I don’t care because is your money and you can do whatever you want with it, but the one that should care about it is YOU. So if you want to know or have an idea of what you should be doing with those Wintel servers then go and see the videos to get a few ideas. They are very short, I liked the piñata, it was funny :-)

Article: Exploring System i’s Excess Power

I just read an interesting article in the System iNetwork web site called Exploring System i’s Excess Power.

I really suggest you go there and take a look, definitely you’ll have a different perspective of why some things happen.

I can’t access iSociety

Remember when I mentioned iSociety? Well, I cannot log-in into my account since a couple of weeks ago. I already asked for my password to be sent to my email account and although it is the same I still get a “Log-in Failed” message.

Will see if that gets fixed soon.
